I love a great road trip. No matter if I’m traveling cross country or cross town to the next Quilt Shop, any excuse to get out for a new adventure and I’m in. But, for those longer journeys, here’s a list of the 5 best quilting projects to sew on the road.
Awhile back I traveled by air to Nevada for my mom’s birthday. It’s a trek I make every year. That year we drove down to Las Vegas for an added adventure. However, driving from Reno to Las Vegas is an 8-hour drive plus stops. Between the road trip and my 4-hour layovers both directions, I knew I needed to take a quilting project with me just to stay sane. I can’t abide idle hands. 
So, after packing up my quilt project supplies I thought you’d like to check out the best quilt projects for traveling!
Top 5 Quilting projects you can sew on the Road
English Paper Piecing
Epp is the art of wrapping fabric around a paper template (usually in hexagons and other geometric shapes) then hand stitching them together to form your quilt top.
Hooped Embroidery
This is one of my favorites! I especially like to work on cross stitch and other fun hand embroidery pieces.
Hand Applique
Applique can also easily be done in the hoop. However, when taking this project on the road I like to spray baste my pieces to the foundation ahead of time so it’s less slipping and sliding while on the road.
Hand Quilting
The time-honored tradition of hand quilting your quilt sandwich is great when on the road or on a plane! However, those queen and king size quilts are better worked on in a car. 
Hand Binding a Quilt
Just like hand quilting, the binding is another great project you can do just about anywhere. I even know of a few designers that have been caught hand binding a quilt on the plane to their next quilt show!
No matter where your destination, or how long it takes to get there, having a great quilt project to take along helps the time go faster and you’ll soon have a fabulous new quilt!
